Birmingham City sacked Harry Redknapp on Saturday evening after a 3-1 home defeat to Preston North End left the Championship club second-bottom of the table. It was Birmingham's sixth straight defeat in all competitions and they have won one game since the start of the season. It was the former Tottenham manager's 13th game in charge.
The 70-year-old Redknapp took over on a temporary basis at St Andrew's with three games remaining last season after Gianfranco Zola's resignation. Having guided the club to safety on the final day of the campaign – City won their last two games – Redknapp signed a one-year contract in May.
He recruited 14 players on permanent or loan deals over the summer – costing around £20m– but it has not been enough to keep Redknapp in his job. Lee Carsley, the manager of Birmingham's development squad, will take temporary charge.
A club statement read:
"Unfortunately due to the poor start to the campaign which sees the club second from bottom of the Championship, we are left with no choice but to terminate the contract of the manager with immediate effect."Redknapp cut a frustrated figure as he spoke after the Preston game, before the announcement of his departure was made, although his words suggested he knew his position was under threat.
He was later adamant he would have delivered success, saying he was hamstrung by injuries and deals that did not get done during the transfer window.
"I am disappointed. It's been difficult, I have had one week with a new team and new players, one week," he told the Birmingham Mail. "It's not an excuse but today I had three of the forwards missing who I would have picked, probably the three most exciting players in all honesty.
"It takes time to build a football team, not one week. I didn't get the players in I was after in pre-season and suddenly I have got a load of players in.
"A lot of the targets I was after I couldn't get over the line and I still felt that given time I would have given them a team that would have been challenging for promotion, I had no doubt about that."
Zola managed two wins from his 24 games in charge, while his predeccesor, Gary Rowett, now the Derby manager, was sacked last December, with the club in seventh place and out of the play-off places only on goal difference.Redknapp was one of three Football League managers sacked , with Chesterfield parting ways with Gary Caldwell and Port Vale dispensing with Michael Brown, both in League Two.
