Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey. We realized that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together.

We feel kind of like pioneers in this--there's no disharmony here, no falling-outs, no lawyers squaring-off. We've made this decision together, amicably and with each other's best interests at heart. "A wise man once said--'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave.' We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we're going to walk away from it.

R.E.M. is unique in that they are very much still the group of friends from Athens, Georgia that they've been since the band formed in 1979. While their career has spanned 15 studio albums and huge global success, the band itself only ever comprised the four original members. The one person to leave this tight-knit group was drummer Bill Berry, who retired two years after suffering a brain aneurysm on-stage during 1995's "Monster" tour. But not before extracting a promise from his band mates that they would continue on as R.E.M.: "Bill insisted he would stay, if his leaving meant breaking the band up," remembers Michael Stipe.
Mills adds: "We have always been a band in the truest sense of the word. Brothers who truly love and respect each other. Era ora. L'ultima volta che li ho visti dal vivo (credo fosse il 2006) c'era gente che scommetteva sul nome del primo infartuato della band.

per me l'avrebbero potuta fare anche loro allora, li scoprii nel 1988, quando per radio cominciarono a passare The One I Love, nell'89 li andai a vedere a Perugia durante il loro Green Tour, cominciai ad ascoltare i loro dischi precedenti e in breve diventarono una delle mie band preferite dell'epoca, poi l'inizio della fine con Out of Time, Losing my Religion, sono quasi arrivato a odiarla, sparata a tutto volume in ogni dove, infine quello che per me è il loro ultimo disco Automatic For The People, dopo ho provato ad ascoltare i loro lavori ma non sono più riusciti a toccarmi, ed è per questo che questa notizia non mi suscita nessuna emozione

mamma mia che botta. i segnali c'erano, ma vedere le cose nero su bianco fa sempre un altro effetto.
tra l'altro, ricordo che quando li ho visti l'ultima voltai live, a napoli nel 2008, a pochi passi da me c'era uno che, con amici, stava a parlà del gol de turone e faceva "si vabbè ce pijano per il culo ma quello era bono davero"!

Io adoro i REM e pure gli U2. Ma i Beatles, che da soli hanno stravolto la musica del Globo, hanno suonato insieme sette anni. SETTE anni, e via.
Forse la scelta migliore, ma è sempre una botta..
Erano anni che avevano perso la loro magia. Già "Up", l'ultimo loro album che ho ascoltato con interesse, stava in bilico tra voglia di rinnovamento e un pizzico di noia. Comunque rimarranno dei grandi della musica.
Bologna, autunno 1986: primi mesi d'università, colonna sonora delle mie giornate: Murmur.
Li scoprii così, prima ne avevo sentito solo alcuni pezzi.
E subito m'innamorai di loro.
Ricordo che chiesi subito a un amico di duplicarmi la cassetta di Life's Rich Pageant (ce l'ho ancora!).
Il resto è storia della musica, compreso il meraviglioso concerto visto a Bologna nel 1989 (Green Tour, conservo ancora la maglietta), fino a Out of Time.
Poi l'inevitabile declino (quoto V.)
Due cose, ancora:
"Not everyone can carry the weight of the world" diceva Stipe in Talk about the passion. Loro l'hanno fatto!
"Buy the sky and sell the sky and lift your arms up to the sky, fall on me" è nel mio cuore, endlessly.

Il primo album comprato fu il (loro) secondo, Reckoning. Complice la moderata rotation su Videomusic di So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry). Era la primavera del 1984 e la Lazio di Chinaglia presidente si sarebbe salvata dalla B. C'era di che accontentarsi.
La preferita dell'epoca.
Si recupera l'esordio, Murmur, dell'anno precedente, e si scopre una fede. In jingle jangle we trust. Facile però, col cuore già frollato da infiniti ascolti dei Byrds.
Non c'è tempo per respirare, un disco l'anno ed ecco nel 1985 la svolta "inglese" di Fables of the Reconstruction. Joe Boyd (Nick Drake) alla produzione e qualche mah di troppo nei miei commenti. Mi mancava l'America, anche sghemba e stralunata, quella dei R.E.M. Col senno del poi gran disco. Non ritrovo sul tubo la perla assoluta di Wendell Gee (studio version), che vale un pomeriggio estivo a rotolarsi nel grano, bere all'ombra, respirare cicale e azzurro. Affidando la regia alla morte.
Gli altri due singoli del disco.
Per molti quello del 1986, Lifes Rich Pageant, è il disco capolavoro dei R.E.M. Non saprei, forse sì. Di sicuro è difficilissimo scegliere tra la loro produzione degli anni '80.
La fede è salda, continuo a credere ai coyotes.
Nel 1987, Document, le prime spallate, a saggiare la resistenza della barriera che separa l'indie (allora chiamato college rock) dal mainstream.
Qui in tutta la sua bellezza acustica.
Questa la mia favorita, dal vivo indimenticabile.
Green, nel 1988, prosegue nell'opera distruttiva di certe barriere. Il botto è alle porte, sebbene ancora non proprio maturo.
La mia cartolina da quel disco.
Il concerto di Perugia (The Go-Betweens in apertura 8) ), giugno 1989, prima volta in Italia, baci, abbracci, macchine cariche delle solite facce, da Roma, Napoli. C'eravamo tutti, per la prima e ultima volta in un palazzetto dello sport, piccolo e sgangherato.
Da allora un'altra storia, gli anni '90, Losing My Religion, gli stadi, ecc.
Non ho mai rinnegato nulla però, l'amore cambia. E ho continuato a fare la fila ai concerti. Faticando un po' a intercettare le solite facce. Anzi, qualcuna non l'ho proprio più vista.
Ne è valsa la pena, amisciiiii!
